Complement: Deficiency Diseases

چکیده
Individuals with genetically determined complement deficiencies have a variety of clinical presentations. Most patients present with an increased susceptibility to infection, otherswith a variety of rheumatic diseases, still others with angio-oedema, and in rare instances, patients may even be asymptomatic. The elucidation of the pathophysiological basis for the different clinical presentations of complement-deficient individuals has contributed to a better understanding of the physiological role of complement in normal individuals.

C3 and C4 Complement Levels in Iron Deficiency Anemia
Background and Objectives: Complement proteins are some of the most important plasma proteins of the innate immune system. Impaired immune function is reported in subjects who are iron deficient, and there are documents that these patients are prone to infection. This study was conducted to show whether serum C3 and C4 complement change in adult nonpregnant female with iron deficient anemia or ...
متن کاملAssessment of complement deficiency in patients with meningococcal disease in The Netherlands.
The frequency of complement deficiency in 176 of 7,732 patients with meningococcal disease in the Netherlands from 1959 through 1992 was assessed. Complement deficiency was found in six patients (3%): 3 (7%) of the patients with Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C disease, 1 (2%) of the patients with N. meningitidis serogroup A disease, and 2 (33%) of the patients with infections due to uncommon...
متن کاملDeficiency of the eighth component of complement associated with recurrent meningococcal meningitis--case report and literature review.
The authors report a case of deficiency of the eighth component of complement in a young adult with a history of three episodes of meningitis; one of them proved to be meningococcal. The literature was reviewed and meningitis due to Neisseria meningitidis strains causing disease in complement-deficient and complement-sufficient patients was demonstrated. Meningococcal disease may be the first m...
متن کاملA Case of Meningococcal Sepsis and Meningitis with Complement 7 Deficiency in a Military Trainee
Complement component 7 (C7) deficiency leads to the loss of complement lytic function, and affected patients show increased susceptibility to encapsulated organisms infection, especially Neisseria meningitidis. Recently, we have experienced a 20-year-old military trainee with meningococcal sepsis and meningitis who was diagnosed as having C7 deficiency based upon the undetectable serum C7 prote...
متن کاملComplement C4 deficiency and HLA homozygosity in patients with frequent intraoral herpes simplex virus type 1 infections.
Three consecutive patients with no apparent immunodeficiency who had frequent intraoral herpes simplex type 1 recurrences, a rare complication of herpes simplex virus infection, were found to have a total deficiency of either the A or B isotype of the complement component C4 and to be homozygous for the studied HLA antigens. A combination of HLA homozygosity, which may lead to impaired T cell r...
